Chapter 5: Evolution! The Macrophage Spine Gu!
Chapter 5: Evolution! The Giant Devouring Spine Worm!
The Lighthouse.
“Mark, the city lord wants you to attend the council session. Take your junior officer with you,” Jing Nan, the tall and commanding woman, entered.
Unexpectedly, the scavengers were still busy beyond measure, and from the stance of Mo City’s team, it seemed they were about to engage in battle again at any moment.
“Feixue and a Dustborn are still down there, their fate unknown. I’m going down immediately with my team to search and rescue,” Mark said.
Jing Nan was momentarily stunned but knew once Mark made a decision, it was hard to change. “I’ll go explain it to the city lord.”
Thud… thud…
At that moment, Fan Di, the Radiant, burst in with several henchmen from the Law Sect, their arrogance blatant as they swaggered in. “Deploying scavengers for two people with zero survival chances, consuming vast strategic resources—this goes against the Lighthouse’s principles. Besides, one of them is a Dustborn.”
Before Mark could react, Mo City stepped forward. “What did you say?”
“Do you want me to repeat it? Captain Mark, I hope you can keep your subordinates in check so they don’t bark like mad dogs,” the Radiant’s lips curled slightly, her delicate chin raised with pride.
Mark strode past. “I will, of course, explain everything to the city lord. Whatever punishment I deserve, I will bear alone. But right now, no one will stop me!”
The Radiant’s mouth twitched. “Fine, I’ll be waiting for Captain Mark to come back and accept his punishment.”
Behind them, Ran Bing, Mo City, Jeff, and Erica followed closely—the entire main group mobilized.
“Everyone else rest well upstairs. We’ll be back shortly,” Mark called over his shoulder.
Mark and Erica wore gravity suits, while the others boarded a jeep as they slowly descended.
…
Gobi Grand Canyon.
Two figures struggled, climbing up a steep cliff—a true test of endurance. Several times, Feixue neared exhaustion, but Luo Ke pulled her up swiftly each time.
Finally, they reached the top and collapsed on the ground.
“We didn’t die from the fall, probably thanks to you,” Feixue said faintly, pausing before adding, “Thank you.”
“What do you think?” Luo Ke shrugged, grinning. “I’ve saved you three or four times now. Such a heavy debt of life can only be repaid at the Dawn Hall, right?”
Feixue’s breath caught for a moment, then she said coldly, “Dustborns aren’t eligible to reproduce. You can forget about that.”
Luo Ke laughed. “Relax. I’m not interested in Dawn Hall. Too many onlookers spoil my performance.”
Besides, Feixue isn’t my type. I prefer cute little howl-girls or even Boss Bai.
Boss Bai, please stomp on me hard! (Just joking, I’m just borrowing a line from the comments.)
Feixue stood, scanning the surroundings. “According to the Lighthouse’s navigation route, the distance between us shouldn’t be far. The captain and the others will definitely come down to rescue us.”
She inadvertently glanced at Luo Ke’s back and was shocked to find the exposed skin had stopped bleeding. The initial signs of infection had vanished, showing faint signs of healing.
Such a terrifying wound, and in just a few hours? How could this be? Even the captain’s recovery ability isn’t this astonishing!
But thinking of Luo Ke’s incredible mutation ability, Feixue’s doubts vanished, replaced only by deep concern for the man.
What is his true purpose hiding among the Dustborn?
Where does his mutation come from—is it the Crimson Essence?
His head was blown apart by my sniper rifle—will it even grow back?
In truth, Luo Ke was a bit dissatisfied with his self-healing. Others’ regenerations were instantaneous flesh and blood rebirth with full status restored. Why did he still have to scab and shed scars? It was somewhat disappointing!
He was five evolution points short. He scanned the barren desert for a lone Devourer Beast but saw none in the vast emptiness, not a single spine worm.
“A sandstorm’s coming!” No prey found, but a vast yellow sandstorm swept in from afar. Luo Ke immediately took to his heels.
Within the devouring sandstorm, vague shadows appeared. Huge black tentacles occasionally emerged, and a deep, resonant roar like a horn blown across an ocean sent shivers down Luo Ke’s spine.
What in the world is that?
Why do so many terrifying things keep popping up as soon as I arrive?
“Quick! Into the city!”
Feixue pointed toward a ruined city ahead, where an underground parking lot was visible from afar.
The two scrambled inside, coughing as the yellow sand filled their mouths and noses.
Bang… bang…
The ground trembled as a colossal creature slowly stomped, its breaths echoing like an old steam train.
“King-class Devourer Beast?” Feixue whispered, barely daring to breathe.
After a long time, the thunderous noise faded, and the sandstorm subsided.
Feixue turned back but found Luo Ke had vanished. She stood dumbfounded. “4048? 4048!”
Deep in the dark parking garage, Luo Ke sensed the Crimson Essence and the sweet, fragrant scent of evolution points. Without light, he could see differently colored images and moved freely in the darkness.
After repeatedly encountering Devourer Beasts beyond his power, he had to seize any chance to devour evolution points to increase his survival odds in this apocalypse.
“Beast form!” he silently commanded.
His back tore open as his true form emerged. His human skin shrank rapidly into a ball, tucked tightly into a recess along his spine for protection.
Luo Ke had transformed into a giant spine worm, one meter long, far more imposing than ordinary spine worms.
He could only fully separate from his human form using this ability; otherwise, at most half his spine worm body would protrude from the skin without full detachment.
Hiss—
Several spine worms crawled out from abandoned cars, stunned, staring blankly at their “kin.”
Snap!
One claw stabbed down, piercing several spine worms thoroughly, skewering them like sashimi before devouring them with a satisfying crunch that delighted his soul.
