Volume 1, Chapter 4: Envy

Fang Jia stared angrily at Jiang Huan’s departing back, stomping his foot in frustration. Then, he swung his large blade again and charged toward the puppets.
The top five in this trial would receive extremely generous rewards.
First place would even be granted a bottle of Pure Spirit Elixir, the best choice for enhancing the bond with one’s spirit weapon.
It was well known that only when the spirit weapon’s affinity was sufficiently high could a Spirit Master unleash its full power.
Moreover, when facing certain special opponents, a high affinity ensured the spirit weapon would not rebel.
To improve efficiency, Fang Jia leapt directly into the midst of two trial puppets, wielding his blade to fight them off one against two.
His martial techniques burst forth intermittently, forcing the two puppets onto the defensive.
It was as if he saw Jiang Huan’s hateful face on the puppets!
“Die!” he shouted.
Seizing the moment, he aimed his blade at the neck of the puppet on the left and swung down.
Before the blade landed, to his puzzled eyes, the left puppet collapsed weakly.
A broken, shattered sword protruded conspicuously from its chest.
Then, like a ghost, Jiang Huan appeared once again before him.
His face still wore that irritating, smug smile.
“Hey, Fang Jia, I’m here to help you.”

Fang Jia’s face was filled with shock; his blade’s momentum did not falter, but lacking the force to resist, he lost balance.
At that moment, the other puppet took advantage of the opening and slashed his back with claws in an instant.
A wave of exhaustion surged through him; his eyelids involuntarily drooped, and his body longed to collapse.
Suddenly, it felt as though someone embraced him.
“Fang Jia, are you alright?”
In his dazed gaze, he saw Jiang Huan’s expression of malicious delight.
“Hey, you there, catch him!”
With those words, Jiang Huan tossed Fang Jia toward the safety of the crowd.
Then Fang Jia felt a sudden weightlessness, as if ascending.
Thud!
He hit the ground.
The intense pain surged instantly but was soon overwhelmed by the dizziness spreading from his wounds.
“Jiang Huan! You really deserve to die!” he cursed inwardly, though Jiang Huan was unaware.
At this moment, Jiang Huan plunged the broken sword into the chest of a nearby beast.

Listening to the system’s notifications, Jiang Huan’s lips curved slightly upward.
His broken sword swung with increasing fervor as he roamed through the crowd, ostensibly bearing some of his classmates’ burdens.
