Volume One, Chapter 40: An Ambush Lies in Wait
Scorpion and Erhu carried Wang Teng as they sprinted toward the mountain gate. Relying on his knowledge of the Golden Dragon Temple and the enhancement of his [Stealth] ability, Jiang Heng followed them silently. From time to time, he swung his Thousand-Blade weapon to flush out demonic beasts hiding in the bushes near the ruined temple.
"Damn it! It's an ambush! Don't run that way!"
"Turn back, quickly!"
Without even considering scouting ahead, the pair changed direction and continued their desperate flight toward the gate. Yet, to their astonishment, no matter where they fled, they were surrounded almost immediately. They stopped on the steps in front of the Great Buddha Hall, brimming with rage.
"Damn it! We capsized in a gutter..."
Qi Yan had no intention of responding; he simply carried the person inside and used his free hand to lock the door.
Qi Yan sat in the car, a cigarette dangling from his lips as he lit it. His arm, wrapped in a suit sleeve, rested outside the car window, his knuckles pale and distinct as he held the smoldering smoke.
Otherwise, he could not fathom why Song Weiyi would treat him this way. Was it truly just for her own selfish desires?
That night, Gu Wenze held Qiao Hua tightly as they lay in the hospital bed. For the first time, he kept his hands to himself, the two of them like birds huddling together for warmth.
Furthermore, she possessed excellent logical thinking and a strong sense of the big picture, both of which were fully demonstrated in the game.
Lu Fa sneered at the sight and immediately summoned Bulton once more, using its spatial distortion to trap all three monsters in place.
Previously, the space had been empty, housing only a single cannon-style telescope, but now it had been furnished with two grand chairs, a wooden coffee table, a set of tea utensils, and even wired electricity and a water dispenser.
[I finally understand what Subhuti meant when he said, "If you cause trouble in the future, just don't mention your master."]
Qiao Hua’s inner thoughts flooded into Gu Wenze’s ears one after another. His expression darkened, and the fragrant meal before him suddenly lost all appeal.
Su Shi, currently calculating how to save money for his younger brother, thought: ...Who? Who is having children with whom? Who is spreading these rumors?
Zhang Cheng shuddered, feeling for the first time that Tang Feng’s words were actually full of wisdom.
Mo Fan drew Ling Feng and stared at the enemy before him. He was deeply perplexed; given his Immortal Essence body’s perception, he should have sensed them coming.
Shen Tu held twin axes in his left hand, and Yu Lei wielded a single spear in his right; both of their weapons glowed with a blue light.
"I, Ye San, swear on my life that Lady Lin and I are innocent!" Ye San spoke righteously. Who isn't capable of swearing an oath? They say there are gods three feet above one's head, but why had he never seen a god help anyone? In truth, an oath is the easiest guarantee to make—a mere casual remark.
If Mo Fan were to exert his full strength and use the shift of stars, could Mu Nan really prevent him from escaping?
I took the mountain-breaking shovel off the box, but strangely, it felt as if something was slowly changing. The iron box suddenly sank, functioning like a button, and became flush with the ground. What had happened? The Underworld King and his group heard the commotion and all looked toward us.
However, they were, after all, mid-level ninja with superb techniques. Changing their footing in the dark, they used a burst of force to neutralize Tang Feng’s momentum, and in the next moment, their katanas descended upon him once again.
"What good fortune? We didn't do anything; you must have misread the situation," Julie denied.
Yang Xue’e watched Meng Fan bustling about and smiled faintly. This wasn't just about giving them gifts; Meng Fan clearly wanted to network with more high-ranking officials in Yanjing. Sending gifts to her family didn't require all of this.
Master Yuanjue tapped the pressure points on the two, watching as Qiqige and Zhuoke slowly regained consciousness.
It wasn't that they didn't want to flee, but they dared not. Zhang Jiao’s personal guards held every passage, and in this short hour, they had already captured two hundred deserters. The headless corpses of those two hundred men now lay before them.
Tang Weilan stood quietly in place, the fierce, howling gale deflected by the green lotus surrounding her. Her beautiful eyes, clear as water, flickered as she watched the two clash.
Black chains erupted, piercing through space and churning with vast source energy. The space around Xiao Yan seemed to be locked down. He watched helplessly as the black chains grew in his pupils. In the distance, Wu Shaoqi’s eyes were bloodshot, as if he were witnessing Xiao Yan’s chest being pierced through.
Unknowingly, another twenty minutes or so passed. As they swam, everyone suddenly realized that the mountain wall above them was gone, which meant the passage they had entered had finally come to an end. Seeing this, everyone hurriedly surfaced.
"There is an inn over there; let's stay there tonight," Shi Yao said, scanning the surroundings and spotting a decent-looking inn not far away.
In the private room, Zhao Qingshan sat in his chair, let out a soft exclamation upon seeing the stone pillar, and then, as if recalling something, his expression shifted slightly. Two beams of sharp light shot from his eyes, and he stared at Xiao Yan’s location in shock, his usually calm face trembling.
This power lay dormant in the sea of consciousness, and although it could not be utilized by Jiang Shenwu, it helped him withstand many external forces attempting to invade his mind.
Li Liang caught sight of the personal guards following close behind Zhao Yi, along with the two murderous generals, Dian Wei and Murong Fu. He stopped in his tracks: "The Empress’s summons concerns classified matters; the General cannot bring such a large force." Exercising caution, he placed his own purple cloak into Zhao Yi’s hands, signaling him to put it on.
When Yun’er saw the indifferent gaze cast by the Jade Fairy, her delicate body trembled. This look, though devoid of killing intent, was all too familiar to them—the Jade Fairy was already furious.
"Don't say anything for now; whatever it is, let's leave this place first." Before anyone knew when, Zijin, who had remained silent all along, suddenly appeared beside Shi Yao, taking a defensive stance.
"Yes." Looking at the sincere Chang'e, an absurd thought flashed through Hou Yi’s mind, yet he still answered her.
