Chapter 34: A Wager with Mrs. Jia

Three months passed in the blink of an eye. Qin Huairu’s belly had grown noticeably large, and for the sake of her safety and that of the child, Wang Lin had not allowed Qin Huairu or Lou Xia’e to go to work these past few days. They stayed in the courtyard all day to rest.
Qin Min was showing as well, which delighted Jia Zhang beyond measure.
“Hahaha, did you see that? My Jia family won’t die out after all. My daughter-in-law is truly something—she got pregnant in a single day, far more capable than that Qin Huairu.”
Qin Huairu had no desire to argue with Jia Zhang. Watching the old woman jump around in delight, she smiled and said, “Indeed, your daughter-in-law is impressive. She managed to get pregnant in just one day.”
She placed particular emphasis on the words “one day.” The people nearby caught the hidden meaning, but Jia Zhang, in the midst of her excitement, acted as though she had heard nothing.
Of course, it was also possible that she had heard perfectly well and was merely pretending otherwise. After all, this was the Jia family’s only hope.
“It’s good that you know your place. Luckily, my Jia Dongxu didn’t marry you. Otherwise, my family would have had no descendants.”
Jia Zhang was being exceptionally arrogant, and, by coincidence, Wang Lin happened to walk over at that very moment.
“Jia Zhang, why aren’t you hurrying home to take good care of your precious granddaughter? If you’re careless for even a moment, you might lose her.”
The instant Jia Zhang realized that Wang Lin dared to mock her, her fury exploded.
“That good-for-nothing Qin Huairu is the one carrying a good-for-nothing daughter! My Qin Min is definitely carrying a boy. Yes, definitely a boy!”
A faint smile curled at the corner of Wang Lin’s mouth.
“How about we make a wager? If Qin Min gives birth to a daughter, you’ll go after First Uncle Yi Zhonghai. If she has a son, I’ll pay you one hundred yuan. What do you say? Are you taking the bet?”
Jia Zhang thought it over and decided that she could not lose either way.
She had long wanted to find herself another partner, but concern for her reputation had forced her to engage only in discreet exchanges of steamed buns behind everyone’s backs.
Now, with this wager against Wang Lin, she had a perfectly respectable excuse. No matter whether she won or lost, she would not suffer. Jia Zhang was no fool—why would she refuse?
“I accept! Hmph, get that one hundred yuan ready!”
Though Jia Zhang spoke confidently, her thoughts were entirely different.
“Please, Heaven, bless me. Old Jia, bless me too. Let that good-for-nothing Qin Min give birth to a daughter! Only then can I live happily in the future.”
Thinking of the ninety-nine yuan Yi Zhonghai received every month, Jia Zhang’s heart began to race, and she prayed even more fervently.
First Aunt was instantly displeased when she saw Wang Lin and Jia Zhang wagering over her husband.
“How can the two of you behave like this?”
Wang Lin walked over to First Aunt and spoke in a calm voice.
“First Aunt, do you want a child? If you do, divorce First Uncle. He’s impotent.”
Wang Lin’s voice was so low that only First Aunt could hear him.
Her entire body shuddered. She did not want to believe that what Wang Lin had said was true.
Yet everyone was selfish at heart, always filled with fantasies about the future.

Besides, First Aunt was no pushover. Otherwise, she could never have become Yi Zhonghai’s wife.
“Are you certain that what you said is true?”
First Aunt grabbed Wang Lin as he was about to leave and questioned him.
“Of course. You only have a minor heart problem. As long as you divorce him, I can cure your heart disease.”
First Aunt took a deep breath and agreed without hesitation.
“Fine. I’ll divorce him today.”
But inwardly, she had already made a different decision.
“I’m sorry, Old Yi. Everything is for the sake of having a child.”
“It isn’t time yet. Wait for my word. Understand?”
“All right. I’ll listen to you.”
First Aunt was not stupid. Wang Lin’s abilities were clearly extraordinary; otherwise, why would Director Wang and the police all take his side?
She believed that a man like him would not lie without reason, nor did he have any need to lie.
“To put your mind at ease, I’ll take you to the hospital for an examination.”
“All right.”
Wang Lin came over to Qin Huairu and smiled.
“Wife, let’s go to the hospital today for another checkup.”
Qin Huairu nodded lightly.
“All right, husband.”
First Aunt hurriedly said, “Wang Lin, as First Aunt, I’ll accompany you and take a look as well!”
“All right. Then I’ll trouble you, First Aunt.”
Qin Huairu smiled and agreed.
Although Wang Lin had spoken to First Aunt in such a low voice that no one else could hear them, Qin Huairu and Lou Xia’e had heard every word clearly.
The hospital Wang Lin visited was not the Red Star Affiliated Hospital, but the General Hospital of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, which specialized in treating military personnel.
The hospital’s medical equipment and standards were far superior to those of the Red Star Affiliated Hospital. Upon arriving there, First Aunt was completely bewildered.
“Director Wang? Are you a soldier?”
Wang Lin shook his head. Ordinary people had no right to know his true identity.
“Hahaha, Little Brother Wang, you’ve finally arrived. I’ve been waiting for you for quite some time.”

The moment the four of them entered the hospital, an elderly man came forward to greet them.
This was none other than Elder Zhao, the director of the General Hospital of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
“Elder Zhao, please don’t say that. How could I trouble you to come out and receive me personally?”
Wang Lin stepped forward and shook Elder Zhao’s hand before getting straight to the point.
“I came today to have my wife examined. She’s been pregnant for more than three months.”
“Oh, that’s nothing. Consider it done.”
Elder Zhao was delighted. Although his medical skills were exceptional, the person he was treating mattered as well.
A man of Wang Lin’s extraordinary abilities was certainly worth cultivating a relationship with.
“By the way, Elder Zhao, there’s one more matter I’d like to ask for your help with. The woman beside me is our compound’s First Aunt. She has never become pregnant. Could you examine her and see whether there’s anything wrong with her health?”
“Of course. No problem.”
Elder Zhao agreed without a moment’s hesitation.
He remained beside Wang Lin, chatting with him, while Qin Huairu and First Aunt underwent their examinations.
The examinations were soon completed. Before the results had even reached the examining physician, Elder Zhao had already obtained them and brought them over.
“Little Brother Wang, there’s nothing wrong with your child or with Comrade Qin Huairu’s. The baby is perfectly healthy.”
Elder Zhao paused before continuing.
“However, there is a problem with First Aunt’s health. She has heart disease, but that should not affect her ability to conceive. I suspect the issue lies with her husband. There may be a problem in that regard, which is why she has remained childless all these years.”
Upon hearing Elder Zhao’s words, First Aunt’s body swayed.
She thought of all the years she had spent trying to become pregnant, of the countless bowls of traditional medicine she had taken, and of the tears she had shed.
“Why don’t you bring First Aunt’s husband in for an examination tomorrow?” Elder Zhao suggested.
Wang Lin smiled and shook his head.
“That won’t be necessary. It’s enough to confirm that First Aunt herself has no problems.”
Wang Lin and the others left the hospital. Once outside, he turned to First Aunt.
“First Aunt, I didn’t lie to you, did I?”
First Aunt’s expression darkened.
“Don’t worry. I’ll listen to you. But what about my heart disease?”
She had already made up her mind. She had to divorce Yi Zhonghai. She had to have a child of her own.
