Chapter 170: And What Am I? (Part One)
As for merely passing by, it was obviously meant for the bystanders to hear. Yuwen Che smiled and said, "Regardless of the reason, I am very glad you came to see me. Let's go, my master is right here, I will take you to meet him."
Yan Shu was slightly stunned upon hearing this, looking at Yuwen Che in puzzlement.
She... was merely visiting a friend, not representing the Xuantian Sect. Why on earth would she need to meet the Sect Master of the Primeval Sect?
Seeing her perplexed expression, Yuwen Che offered no explanation, but instead turned his gaze toward Xiao Jihan.
Xiao Jihan glanced at him, then turned his eyes to Yan Shu and said, "Master rarely leaves the sect and knows little about the mortal world. According to custom, your affairs with Senior Brother Yuwen indeed require you to pay a visit to Sect Master Shan first."
Yan Shu: ???
Why couldn't she understand a single word of this?
Yuwen Che was acting strangely, and Xiao Jihan was acting strangely too. Previously, he used to call her "Shu'er" without even addressing her as Senior Sister, so why, upon arriving at the Primeval Sect, was he suddenly acknowledging a master?
Yan Shu looked from Yuwen Che to Xiao Jihan, a nagging sense of strangeness washing over her.
Oh well, why waste brain cells pondering it? In any case, these two powerful figures certainly wouldn't sell her out.
With that thought, she nodded and said, "Very well."
The gate-keeping disciples nearby were utterly shocked upon hearing this. What did he mean by "matters regarding his relationship with Senior Brother Yuwen, which called for a visit to the Sect Master"?
Surely it wasn't what they thought it was, right?
Yuwen Che led Yan Shu and Xiao Jihan into the Primeval Sect.
Unlike the Xuantian Sect, which consisted of four peaks and a grand hall, the Primeval Sect was a unified whole composed of various sprawling halls.
Nor was the Primeval Sect like the Xuantian Sect, where ordinary disciples were permitted to take in apprentices of their own; in the Primeval Sect, all disciples were registered under the name of Sect Master Shan Changfeng, making Yuwen Che the senior-most disciple to everyone.
Yuwen Che was gentle and cultured. Even with his lofty status, he treated others with warmth, earning the deep affection of all the disciples in the Primeval Sect. Along the way, everyone they met respectfully bowed and greeted him as "Eldest Senior Brother."
Yuwen Che nodded in acknowledgment. A bolder disciple, catching sight of Yan Shu and Xiao Jihan, asked out of curiosity, "Eldest Senior Brother, who might these two be...?"
Yuwen Che cast a gentle glance at Yan Shu and replied softly, "This is Yan Shu, the Peak Master of the Infinite Peak at the Xuantian Sect. I am taking her to see Master. And this is her disciple, Xiao Jihan."
Upon hearing Yan Shu's name, the disciples were immediately filled with awe and hurriedly bowed in deep respect, saying, "Greetings, Peak Master Yan."
Yan Shu nodded and said, "No need for such formalities, everyone."
Yuwen Che then spoke up, "Alright, off you go to attend to your duties."
Hearing this, the crowd quickly nodded in compliance and watched respectfully as they departed.
The moment they left, the disciples exchanged glances and simultaneously produced their Mystic Spirit Mirrors.
Before long, the news that Yan Shu and Xiao Jihan had arrived at the Primeval Sect, and were even being led by Yuwen Che to meet Shan Changfeng, spread rapidly throughout the entire sect.
When Shan Zhiqing received this news, she was in the middle of practicing sword forms with a senior sister. Startled by the report, she was nearly clipped by her senior sister's sword Qi.
Hastily steadying her nerves, she said to her senior sister, "Senior Sister, let's stop here for today. I need to go and take a look."
Aware of the background and context, her senior sister immediately withdrew her sword, nodded, and replied, "Very well, off you go."
Shan Zhiqing hurried away in a rush. The moment she left, the senior sister let out a light, disdainful scoff. "She treats the Eldest Senior Brother as her exclusive possession, using her status to meddle even when he speaks to the rest of us. Well, now look—the Eldest Senior Brother's fiancée has shown up right on our doorstep. If I were her, I'd hide as far away as possible, yet she actually has the shamelessness to rush right over."
A female disciple standing nearby chimed in, "Why pay her any mind, Senior Sister? She spends all day putting on an act of sweet innocence, which only fools the gullible junior and senior brothers. Among us sisters behind closed doors, who doesn't know that she's actually a flirtatious vixen who loves to seduce anyone she lays eyes on?"
"Yan Shu's arrival couldn't be more timely. It'll give those junior and senior brothers a good chance to witness what a truly celestial maiden looks like."
Shan Changfeng possessed a square-jawed face with thick brows and large eyes, carrying a solemn, severe expression that instantly marked him as a man not to be trifled with.
Seeing Yan Shu, he wore no trace of a smile, maintaining the stern demeanor of a sect master. "I wonder what brings Peak Master Yan to the Primeval Sect this time?"
Before Yan Shu could answer, Yuwen Che spoke up, "Master, Yan Shu and I fell in love at first sight and have pledged our lives to one another. I have brought her here specifically today to pay respects to you as my master."
Hearing this, Yan Shu widened her eyes in astonishment. She subconsciously glanced toward Xiao Jihan, only to find him wearing a completely calm expression, his favorability rating toward her not dropping by even a single fraction.
Noticing her gaze, he even offered her a reassuring look.
Turning her attention back to Yuwen Che, she found him equally composed, as if discussing life-long vows and meeting the parents was something they had already planned out beforehand.
Yan Shu felt somewhat bewildered. Everyone else acted as though it was entirely natural and pre-arranged, leaving only her—the person directly involved—completely in the dark.
It made her look rather like she was making a fuss over nothing.
Shan Changfeng gave Yuwen Che a long, deep look before turning his gaze to Yan Shu. "Peak Master Yan, have you discussed this thoroughly with Che'er?"
Though Yan Shu had no idea what game Yuwen Che and Xiao Jihan were playing, both men counted as her own people in her eyes. In front of outsiders, she naturally had to back her own people.
Therefore, she nodded and answered, "Yes."
Upon hearing this, Shan Changfeng's expression suddenly chilled, though he quickly masked it and slowly spoke, "Becoming cultivation partners is no trivial matter. You must give it careful thought."
Yuwen Che smiled. "Master should know your disciple's temperament better than anyone. Once your disciple makes a decision, it is inevitably the result of careful consideration."
Shan Changfeng gave him another deep look, then turned back to Yan Shu. "And is Peak Master Yan also acting after careful consideration? As far as I know, your relationship with your disciple seems somewhat unusual."
"Sect Master Shan is joking."
Xiao Jihan spoke up calmly, "My master and I share a pure master-disciple bond. It's simply because I am Master's only disciple, and the Infinite Peak houses only the two of us, coupled with the fact that Master is quite young herself, that our relationship is somewhat closer than ordinary master-disciple pairs—we are both teacher and friend, and nothing more."
Shan Changfeng swept a sidelong glance at Xiao Jihan before looking away, clearly paying him no mind whatsoever.
He simply looked at Yan Shu and pressed, "Why are you not answering, Peak Master Yan? Is your relationship with Che'er truly the result of careful consideration?"
Listening to the words of Xiao Jihan and Yuwen Che, and observing Shan Changfeng's attitude, Yan Shu vaguely began to understand. She smiled at Shan Changfeng and said, "Sect Master Shan worries too much. Since I have come here today, it is naturally after mature deliberation."
Shan Changfeng was slightly taken aback, seemingly not expecting such a reply from her. After a brief silence, he slowly said, "Since that is the case, I certainly have no objection. You two..."
"I object!"
An urgent voice rang out from outside the doors of the grand hall. Shan Zhiqing hurried inside, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked at Yuwen Che and cried, "I object! Senior Brother, if you are going to be with her, then what am I to you?! I gave you everything!"
Yan Shu: ??!!(⊙o⊙)...
