Chapter Thirty-Five: I’ve Put Up with You Long Enough
The city guard was visibly excited and immediately led Gu Sha to a steel hall, temporarily built outside a special passage. However, the hall was empty. The city guard apologized, saying, "I'm sorry, this hall is dedicated to registering extraordinary individuals, but there are so few of them that the staff finish work quite early. Please wait here while I go fetch someone!"
Gu Sha nodded and took a seat. The city guard hurried to the window and pressed the bell. He pressed for a long time, but no one responded. Glancing back at Gu Sha, feeling anxious, he abandoned the bell and went straight to the iron door, knocking vigorously.
Bang, bang, bang.
The knocking was much louder than the bell, and, echoing inside the steel hall, the sound was even more pronounced. Immediately, an impatient woman's voice rang out, "Knock, knock, knock! What are you knocking for? Are you trying to summon death?"
Soon, a woman of decent appearance emerged, wearing high heels and a miniskirt, a low-cut top beneath a short blazer, looking as if she had just woken up. Her expression was foul as she opened the door and rebuked the city guard, "What is it? Don’t you know to use the bell? Knocking like that—are you sick?"
The city guard retorted, annoyed, "I pressed the bell for ages and you never answered, so I knocked."
"Do you think I don’t need time to get up?" the woman snapped, then demanded, "If you have business, say it. If you have something to release, release it. I need my beauty sleep! If I can’t sleep well, will you take responsibility?"
The city guard was displeased, "Officer Lin, we’re out here on duty. If you’re free, no one minds you taking a break, but when there’s work, you must attend to it immediately. It’s your responsibility. If you want to sleep, why are you on duty?"
"None of your business!" the woman responded angrily. "What do you want? Hurry up, I don’t have time for your nonsense."
"You—" The city guard restrained his anger and said, "There’s an extraordinary individual here who wishes to join the Extraordinary Association. You need to verify and register him, then notify the Association."
The woman instantly erupted, "Do you know how troublesome verification and registration is? Can’t he come tomorrow? Why must you make a fuss in the middle of the night? Do you think you’re some big deal? Don’t you know I’m the only one on duty tonight? Take him away and bring him back tomorrow!"
The city guard was stunned, almost doubting his ears, and uncertainly said, "Officer Lin, listen carefully: it’s registration for an extraordinary individual, an extraordinary individual!"
"I heard you," the woman said impatiently. "But he’s not one yet, is he? Without verification, he’s nothing. Tell him to come tomorrow!"
Gu Sha himself was also taken aback.
Was this woman still half-asleep?
Although he hadn’t become an extraordinary individual in his previous life at this stage, he had seen the status of extraordinary people in other bases. Let alone the early days when they were so rare—even in later times, when extraordinary people were everywhere, all official departments prioritized their business.
But now,
At the dawn of the apocalypse, when extraordinary individuals were so scarce,
This woman dared to claim that without registration, one wasn’t an extraordinary individual, and even asked them to wait until she’d finished sleeping before handling their business!
The city guard was utterly shocked by her words. He knew just how seriously the authorities valued extraordinary individuals and how much an extraordinary person could contribute to the fortress. If they offended one and he decided not to join, the loss would be immense. More crucially, if word spread about this neglect, countless extraordinary individuals might refuse to join the Association.
Incensed, the city guard said, "Lin Meifeng, if you don’t handle this immediately, I’ll go to the Association headquarters in the city and file a complaint against you!"
"Hmph." Lin Meifeng snorted, walked over to Gu Sha, and, with a forced smile, said, "Sir, registration and assessment are very troublesome. I need to open the detector and process data and such. Could you come tomorrow?"
Gu Sha replied calmly, "Sorry, I need this done now. I’m very busy."
Lin Meifeng’s expression stiffened, "Sir, my husband is the captain of the Association’s Second Squad. When you join, he could promote you..."
"I said I’m very busy," Gu Sha interrupted. "I don’t have time for your stories."
"You—"
Lin Meifeng’s face grew sour as she glared at Gu Sha, reluctantly stepping into the counter, angrily flinging a folder outside, and shouting, "Come here and register!"
Gu Sha frowned slightly; Lin Meifeng’s attitude was deeply unpleasant. He was joining the Extraordinary Association to obtain an official identity and avoid trouble, but if this identity brought discomfort, there was no need for it.
Seeing Gu Sha unmoved, Lin Meifeng yelled, "Didn’t you hear me? Come register! Don’t you know how busy I am?"
Gu Sha looked at the woman and chuckled coldly, then asked the city guard, "Is this how the authorities show preferential treatment to extraordinary individuals?"
The city guard hurriedly responded, "Mr. Gu, please don’t be angry. This person does not represent the official attitude, nor the Association!"
Then, the city guard stepped to the window and whispered angrily, "Lin Meifeng, I’m telling you, if Mr. Gu leaves because of you, I don’t care how powerful your backer is—I’ll report you at the Association headquarters!"
"What do you want me to do then..." Lin Meifeng, seething, grabbed the folder, stomped over in her high heels, and slammed it on the table in front of Gu Sha, saying, "I’ve personally brought the registration form over. Satisfied? Extraordinary sir, would you be so kind as to register?"
Gu Sha glanced at Lin Meifeng. Honestly, from the moment he first saw her, he’d disliked her and suspected she hadn’t gotten this position through proper channels.
After hearing the city guard’s words, his suspicion was confirmed: this woman was here because she had connections, forced into the job to polish her resume.
After all, in these times,
No one sent on duty would be dressed like Lin Meifeng—high heels, a low-cut dress, full makeup, and looking like she was out for fun.
Even before the apocalypse, it was rare for someone in a government office to dress this way.
Watching Lin Meifeng’s arrogant manner, Gu Sha lost all interest in registering or assessment. He stood up and walked out.
Immediately,
Lin Meifeng protested. The city guard had just said that if Gu Sha left, he would report her. She was here mainly to pad her resume with frontline work experience, but if she were reported, it would all be wasted.
"Hmph," Lin Meifeng snorted at Gu Sha’s retreating back, "Pretentious. I’ve seen plenty like you, trying to fake being an extraordinary individual just to get benefits. Disgusting. What’s the act for? If you want to leave, register first!"
Gu Sha ignored her and walked on.
Lin Meifeng hurled the folder at Gu Sha and shouted, "Stop right there! If I tell you to register, you register—"
Smack.
Gu Sha slapped Lin Meifeng across the face. "I’ve put up with you for long enough. Why are you so shameless?"
Two things to mention.
First, some chapters are now being blocked. If you notice this, don’t worry—I’ll handle it as soon as possible.
Second, a word about combat power. Honestly, I admit the power scaling is a bit vague—that’s my mistake. The main reason is that I’m writing pure power fantasy, focusing on excitement rather than intricate power systems.
Previously, I mentioned that levels one through nine involve unlocking the genetic potential of the body, with no fundamental change—just improvements to strength, speed, agility, perception, and so on.
The real qualitative leap comes after breaking through to become a Battle King, when life quality rises—it’s akin to evolving into a higher being.
Of course, I won’t deny that the power system is not a central focus. The core of this novel is pure enjoyment, and my only requirement is to make it absolutely thrilling!
