Chapter 145: It’s You Who Can’t Catch It
The Yu family learned of the situation quickly. They stormed into the cozy little house and took Yu Xin away, then placed her under strict house arrest, forbidding her from contacting the Bai family as a way to express their anger.
When Bai Yunchuan found Xiaoxiao, neither of them knew what to do. Xiaoxiao wanted to confront Bai’s mother and wake her up with harsh words, but at the same time, she wanted to question the Yu family about why they did nothing to save her. Caught between two difficult choices, Bai Yunchuan attempted to visit the Yu family to see Yu Xin. However, he wasn’t even allowed through the door, and Yu’s mother greeted him by dumping a basin of cold water over his head as she stood at the window, scolding him sharply: “That girl is my own flesh and blood. Years ago, I entrusted her to your family with care, just like this basin of water. It’s your Bai family’s fault for not catching it. Don’t blame us for throwing it out. Now you want to come back and demand her again, even trying to deceive my daughter into saving your malicious old mother? Forget it! I curse her to die soon, that’s the truth!”
Xiaoxiao hurriedly got out of the car and held an umbrella over Bai Yunchuan, afraid that whatever came next wouldn’t be just cold water.
Yet Bai Yunchuan kept his head raised, staring up at that window. His mother-in-law was right—he had failed Yu Xin, and he had no one else to blame.
“Let’s go,” Xiaoxiao said, pulling the drenched Bai Yunchuan away. At night, the chill wind made it easy to fall ill, and in the Bai family’s current state, no one could afford to weaken.
Upstairs, Yu’s mother continued to shout curses. After a long while, Bai Yunchuan gave a bitter smile. He couldn’t wait any longer for Yu Xin, nor could he bear to leave like this. Apart from that bitter smile, there was nothing else he could do.
“Mom!”
Hearing Yu Xin’s voice, Bai Yunchuan stepped out from under the umbrella. Xiaoxiao looked up toward the sound and saw Yu Xin trying to pull her mother back inside, signaling urgently for them to leave quickly. Yu’s mother, scolding in frustration, said, “Foolish daughter, look at what kind of man he is—why would you sacrifice so much for him? Wake up! I’ll help you find someone better. Don’t throw your whole life away!”
As the voices of the mother and daughter gradually faded until they were barely audible, Xiaoxiao urged Bai Yunchuan again to leave. She didn’t know how Bai Yunchuan would explain things to his mother, but no one wanted matters to reach this point.
They say misfortunes never come singly, and indeed, there is truth in that. While Bai Yunchuan and Yu Xin’s troubles remained unresolved, Hua Mei had already moved back to her mother’s home, casually informing Xiaoxiao that she was negotiating a divorce with Zeng Ziyu.
“You were my bridesmaid once, so I should tell you now. There’s nothing to regret. I just hope you can learn from my failure, or else my today might very well be your tomorrow.”
Hua Mei’s words were painfully true. For a moment, Xiaoxiao lost the desire to respond. When one is in despair, everything always seems bleak.
