Chapter 109: Susu Must Protect the Best Brother-in-Law in the World
Su Xiaoyu opened her eyes, feeling as if her entire body was shackled and restrained. Panic swept over her as she frantically surveyed her surroundings.
What was going on?
How could a nightmare plague suddenly appear within her own estate?
It was impossible!
The estate’s security had been personally arranged by her grandfather, and numerous highly paid Dreamwalkers were stationed there. A nightmare plague could never arise naturally within the grounds.
The only certainty was that this nightmare plague… was man-made.
A chill ran through Su Xiaoyu’s veins.
A man-made nightmare plague?
Who could it be? Why set such a nightmare plague in the estate… to envelop so many people? This was a disguise for murder!
Su Xiaoyu was no fool. Determined to become an outstanding Dreamwalker herself, she naturally possessed analytical skills.
Yet her heart sank ever deeper.
The scene around her began to shift.
Taking a deep breath, Su Xiaoyu turned her head to look beside her.
She found herself seated at a square table. In front of her lay a burning white candle, its flickering flame seeming to reflect her visage.
Her expression shifted slightly.
For she felt her soul merging with the candle, as if one entity.
If the candle were to be extinguished… perhaps that would mean her death.
A cold dread instantly spread from her back, crawling like a spiderweb to cover her entire body.
Suddenly—
A warm hand grasped hers.
Startled, Su Xiaoyu turned to see the kindly face of her grandfather reflected in the candlelight.
“Xiaoyu, relax. Grandfather is here,” he said softly.
In that instant, all the pressure suffocating her vanished like smoke.
She felt as if she had found a pillar to lean on.
“Grandfather!” Worry clouded her eyes.
“What’s going on? Someone deliberately set this nightmare plague? Are they trying to harm us?” she asked anxiously.
A cold glint flickered in her grandfather’s eyes but quickly faded.
“Don’t worry. Grandfather is here. I won’t let you get hurt,” he said gently, patting her hand.
Two other figures emerged at the table’s sides—a male servant and a maid.
The estate had countless servants and maids.
Now, both trembled violently, their legs weak, nearly so frightened as to lose control.
Ordinary people had little defense against a nightmare plague.
A mysterious force erupted.
Su grandfather, Su Xiaoyu, and the two servants all raised their hands.
Four hands grasped a pen lying on the table.
Creak… creak…
Just as Zhang Changlin had experienced before, the four hands gripped the pen, its tip scraping the table like a knife, producing an unbearably grating sound.
Creak, creak…
Suddenly, the scraping stopped as the pen moved toward the male servant.
With a “pop,” the white candle before him was extinguished instantly.
Su Xiaoyu, her grandfather, and the maid all stared in horror as from the darkness behind the male servant emerged a pair of icy, pale hands.
Slowly, they gripped his face and began to tear it apart…
Spurts of blood sprayed forth, staining the white candle red as if soaked in blood.
Even the battle-hardened Su grandfather shuddered.
“Xiaoyu, don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid, grandfather is here…” the old man’s face pale, he kept calling out to bolster Su Xiaoyu’s courage.
Su Xiaoyu’s face was grim, but having endured many horrors alongside Du Fang, she remained surprisingly composed.
The dead servant was dragged away.
Then the number of hands holding the pen reduced to three.
The bloodied pen tip resumed its scraping on the table.
Like stones grinding glass—
Creak, creak…
This time, it pointed at the maid.
Amid her screams, the candle beside her went out, and her head was torn open.
The blood pooled thicker on the table, the stench almost suffocating.
Only Su Xiaoyu and her grandfather remained, two hands clutching the pen.
The tip scraped back and forth between them.
Su grandfather’s eyes fixed tightly on the pen’s tip.
He knew that when the pen pointed at someone, the sinister creature lurking in the darkness behind would leap out and shred its prey.
And—
As the pen scraped—
Between him and Su Xiaoyu, grandfather and granddaughter—
Death was certain.
Creak, creak...
Then, abruptly,
The scraping ceased.
At last, the pen pointed—
Directly at Su Xiaoyu.
...
Boom!!!
Zhang Changlin let out a sharp howl as his Dream Spirit surged forth.
The Lionfire state erupted!
Waves of fiery ripples spread, as if to dispel the darkness behind him.
The oppressive weight crushing Zhang Changlin’s body suddenly shattered.
He sprang up abruptly, grasping his broken blade without hesitation.
Biting his finger, he rubbed the blade, breaking its binding.
The broken blade was flung backward in a fierce slash,
Trying to drive away the sinister creature behind him!
Cling!
A crisp sound rang out.
The broken blade was caught.
A pale hand grasped it firmly.
The flames flickering on the blade were smothered by the cold, dark aura.
Zhang Changlin’s eyes narrowed.
A city-destroying level nightmare creature?!
What kind of scheme was this?
Another man-made, city-destroying nightmare plague?
And all within the estate of Jiangling’s wealthiest man—what grudge or hatred could justify such a vicious nightmare plague?
They left no chance of survival.
Zhang Changlin’s anger flared, but the blade in the pale hand was immovable.
“Damn it! Today I’m really going to cut down a city-destroying nightmare and see what that’s like!”
“Fuck!”
Zhang Changlin roared.
His Dream Spirit surged back into his heart, his heartbeat pounding harder and harder.
Like a roaring engine, like a furious lion.
From the darkness, the pale hand that held the broken blade began to take shape.
Wet black hair hung down wildly, his head tilted crookedly.
His skin was as pale as snow, yet as pristine as the purest porcelain, etched with countless cracks.
“Lalalalala...” a soft humming came from the figure’s lips.
Then, gripping the broken blade tightly, he gave a sharp swing.
Zhang Changlin was flung with tremendous force.
The pale hand struck hard against his chest.
Zhang Changlin’s eyes shrank.
He felt as if all the strength in his body was frozen solid.
The pale figure lifted a hand.
A pen slid into it.
“Lalalalala~” the figure sang softly.
Then, gripping the pen, he drove it hard into Zhang Changlin’s waist.
Blood sprayed forth.
Zhang Changlin’s eyes moistened; his face, as black as ink, darkened further...
This time—
He was really getting beaten up!
He might even be finished!
But—
If you’re going to beat me—
Why stab me in the waist?!
Even a nightmare creature should have some sense of honor!
Just as the figure prepared to withdraw the pen from Zhang Changlin’s side and plunge it into his temple,
The motion froze.
“No one can snatch my brother-in-law away from Susu…”
“No one is allowed to harm my brother-in-law!”
A piercing scream echoed.
Boom!!!
The pale figure’s ink-black eyes suddenly blazed with red light!
A terrifying aura descended.
Zhang Changlin faced this oppressive force with an uncanny familiarity,
Like when he had confronted Du Fang’s loving family long ago...
Thud!
Zhang Changlin was blasted away by the overwhelming pressure, crashing to the ground, gasping for breath.
The figure’s black hair whipped wildly through the air.
Gripping the pen, with a flash, he vanished.
...
...
Du Fang slowly opened his eyes.
Rubbing his hair, he looked a bit helpless, a bit speechless.
He turned his head.
Lolo blinked her large, delicate, adorable eyes at him.
“Daddy, did you see Auntie?” she asked expectantly.
Du Fang’s neck stiffened as he glanced at the hand resting quietly on his shoulder—his wife’s.
Finally, he nodded.
“Mm, I saw her.”
Lolo screamed with excitement, “Is Auntie still as kind, beautiful, and gentle as ever?”
Du Fang’s lips twitched slightly.
“Mm… I guess.”
No sooner had he spoken than his eyes suddenly sharpened.
Because behind him,
A soft voice, like a mosquito’s hum, quietly sounded.
“Thank… thank you for the compliment, brother-in-law.”
Du Fang spun around sharply.
There stood a delicate young girl with hands raised before her, clutching a pen.
A breeze blew, stirring her waterfall-like black hair.
Her pure and lovely face appeared faintly beneath the tresses, as if veiled by an enchanting sheer curtain.
She met Du Fang’s startled gaze with a sweet smile.
“Susu wants to protect the best brother-in-law in the whole world!”
