Chapter 122: Why Is Sister Chi at the Guangzheng Group?
Shi Runrun had expected to be driven to the company in the family car. To her surprise, he had sent Qin Feng specifically to pick her up. Seeing a familiar face, Shi Runrun smiled at Qin Feng, then slung her small bag over her shoulder and climbed into the back seat.
Before starting the car, Qin Feng said to her, "Young Madam, the President will be busy quite late today. He instructed that you should just wait for him in his office."
Shi Runrun said "oh" and nodded obediently.
When the car arrived at the entrance of Guangzheng Group and pulled to a stop, Qin Feng helped her out of the vehicle. Having been here several times before, Shi Runrun found that familiarity had eased her nerves; she was no longer as tense as she had been on her first visit. Since that last time, everyone at Guangzheng Group knew she was Xiao Xuezheng’s wife, the young mistress of the Xiao family, and the company's First Lady. The security guards at the door and the receptionists all recognized her.
Shi Runrun smiled and greeted them. As soon as they saw her, they naturally set aside their work, stood up to welcome her, and bowed. Shi Runrun felt flattered; no matter how many times it happened, she was still taken aback by such displays. Fortunately, the grand welcome lasted only a moment, and soon she was escorted by the receptionist into the private elevator reserved for the President, heading toward the top floor.
Upon reaching the top floor, Shi Runrun went straight to the presidential office. Pushing the door open, she found the vast office empty, but a faint, familiar scent still lingered in the air—proof that he had only just left.
Shi Runrun wandered around the office for a bit before stepping out. Passing by the secretarial office, she saw over a dozen assistants with their heads down, busy as spinning tops. She couldn't help but ask Qin Feng, who informed her that Xiao Xuezheng was in the adjacent conference room attending an important meeting.
With nothing to do and feeling bored sitting around, Shi Runrun offered to help the secretaries. However, given her status, who would dare trouble her? The staff in the secretarial office were left in a state of panic, not knowing how to handle the situation. Finally, under Shi Runrun’s insistence, one of the secretaries suggested she go to the nearby printing room to print some documents, treating it as a way to help out.
As long as she had something to do, she didn't care if it was a major task or a minor one. Shi Runrun happily ran to the adjacent printing room to print the files. However, just as she entered, she wasn't paying attention and bumped straight into someone.
She looked up slightly, her almond-shaped eyes brightening, and she couldn't help but call out, "Sister Chi!"
The beautiful woman coming toward her was also taken aback for a moment. Seeing her, she immediately smiled: "Shi Runrun... long time no see!"
"Long time no see, Sister Chi. Why are you here?!" the guileless Shi Runrun asked naturally.
Chi Wanwan glanced at her, curled her lips into a slight smile, and said intentionally, "Oh, my husband works here, so I came to visit him. I also brought him some homemade lunch—look!"
As she spoke, Chi Wanwan lifted the bag in her hand, revealing the lunchbox inside to Shi Runrun.
Hearing this, Shi Runrun exclaimed in surprise, "Sister Chi, you have a husband! Who is he? Which department is he in?"
Shi Runrun could never have guessed that the husband Chi Wanwan was referring to was her own husband. In Chi Wanwan's eyes, Xiao Xuezheng would be hers sooner or later, so calling him her husband now was not too early.
Chi Wanwan’s beautiful eyes flashed. She covered her mouth and giggled, a look of happiness appearing on her face: "He is a high-level executive here. He is always very busy and often doesn't have time to eat, so I make him lunch every day and bring it over. You know, takeout isn't good for one's health."
Shi Runrun nodded, thinking to herself that she would ask Xiao Xuezheng later which executive it was—perhaps a vice president or a department manager.
"And you? Why are you here?" Chi Wanwan asked, feigning ignorance.
Shi Runrun was just about to say, "What a coincidence, I'm here to see my husband too," but before she could get it out, Chi Wanwan interrupted her: "Are you here for a part-time job? I see you're about to use the printing room." She gestured toward the USB drive in Shi Runrun’s hand.
Shi Runrun gave a sheepish smile, shook her head, and said, "No, Sister Chi."
"It's my hus—"
Before she could finish the word "husband," Chi Wanwan glanced at her watch and cut her off again: "Little Run, I'm so sorry, I have some urgent business at the company, so I can't stay here and chat with you! I have to go!"
With that, Chi Wanwan didn't give her a chance to hesitate; she turned and headed for the elevator, stepping inside a moment later. Before the doors closed, Chi Wanwan stood inside and waved, and Shi Runrun waved back with a smile.
However, the moment the elevator doors closed, the sharpness in Chi Wanwan's gaze turned dark. The smile that had graced her beautiful face vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, menacing expression. Chi Wanwan gripped the bag containing the lunchbox, her lips pressed tight—or rather, she bit down on them hard.
She had not expected to run into the wretch Shi Runrun here. She had originally come to get close to Xuezheng by using the child as an excuse, only to be shut out. She never imagined she would encounter Shi Runrun before leaving.
She had intentionally claimed to be here for a part-time job just to avoid hearing Shi Runrun say she was here to see her husband. What of it? Was she proud that Xuezheng was her husband? She must be reveling in the fame and glory that the status brought her!
But Chi Wanwan would never allow herself to hear those words—"Xuezheng is my husband"—come from her mouth. She had no right to flaunt herself in front of her!
Xuezheng was destined to be hers alone, and no one could take him away. Who did Shi Runrun think she was? Just because she was lucky enough to marry Xuezheng, did she think she could act arrogant?
Chi Wanwan sneered. With her here, and with the great-grandson that Elder Xiao was so eagerly awaiting in her womb, Shi Runrun wouldn't be able to enjoy her triumph for much longer! The mere thought of Shi Runrun’s future pain and sorrow brought Chi Wanwan immense satisfaction.
Moreover, she still held an ace up her sleeve.
The next second, Chi Wanwan took her phone out of her small bag and dialed a number.
"It’s me. How is the investigation going? What? The trail went cold? Why?!" Chi Wanwan furrowed her delicate brows as she listened to the person on the other end, then said in a deep voice: "Keep investigating, but be discreet. I suspect the trail went cold because the Xiao family noticed something. I am already certain that Shi Runrun is not the biological daughter of the Shi family, but who her real parents are and how they are connected to Xuezheng—that is what I am most interested in! No matter how much money it takes, you must find the truth for me as soon as possible!"
