Chapter 052: Check on My Wife First!
Shi Runrun never imagined that when he finally caught up with her, when he stood before her, his first words were neither reproach nor anger at her sudden departure. Instead, he asked if she had been well during the days away from him.
His words brimmed with concern, leaving her stunned in his embrace.
Her heart beat wildly, an aching pain spreading from deep within. In that moment, she found herself at a loss for words, unable even to summon the courage to respond.
Had she been well?
Not at all.
On her very first day in City B, she had almost died in the hospital; if not for Qiao Yu secretly following her, she would have vanished from the world altogether.
Every day spent recovering her health had been a struggle, each hour endured in the torment of longing for him.
Every night, as she drifted into dreams, all she saw was him—her thoughts filled entirely with him.
Now, held so closely by him once again, Shi Runrun felt as if she were dreaming.
She could hardly bear it—his gentleness was becoming too much for her.
“Xiao Xuezheng, let me go…”
She struggled as she spoke, slowly pushing his body away, prying his arms from around her waist.
Whether from lack of strength or some other reason, Xiao Xuezheng did not resist. He allowed her to slip from his embrace and retreat step by step, as if afraid of him, shrinking back.
Yet for every step she took, he followed. She instinctively tried to avoid him, but now that he had come to her, he would not let her escape again.
“Don’t step back anymore. There’s a road behind you—cars pass by, it’s dangerous!”
His voice was gentle, but Shi Runrun, her eyes brimming with tears, shook her head and continued to retreat, until she stood in the middle of the road beneath a streetlamp.
He was right—a car approached quickly, its horn blaring sharply, the large sedan unable to stop as it barreled toward her.
Shi Runrun turned, staring at the car hurtling toward her, the piercing horn reminding her of the day everything fell apart—a car just like this, wild and out of control, rushing at her like a beast.
She had been struck, thrown to the hard ground, blood spreading beneath her…
Her child was lost, and her love with him was shattered.
But this time, the expected impact never came. Her wrist was seized by a strong hand, and with a tremendous force, she was pulled from the center of the road.
The car missed her by less than a meter, rushing past.
She found herself once more in a warm, broad embrace. He held her tightly, stepping back, but his balance faltered and his tall frame crashed against a nearby wall.
“Mm…”
A muffled groan of pain escaped him, and Shi Runrun heard it clearly. She immediately looked up.
Under the streetlamp, his handsome, chiseled face had lost its former vigor, pale to the point of fright.
From his forehead, a trickle of red began to flow—it was blood.
He had struck the wall while pulling her to safety.
The realization struck Shi Runrun, and she stared in shock.
“Xiao Xuezheng! You’re bleeding!”
She cried out, reaching to touch his wounded forehead, but her hand was immediately caught and held firmly.
His brows were tightly furrowed, his face taut with suppressed pain, bracing himself against the wall, his gaze fixed intently on her.
He looked her over, head to toe, ensuring she was unharmed before finally breathing a sigh of relief.
As the tension faded, his tall body could no longer support itself. He slid down the wall, sitting on the ground.
Blood continued to flow from his forehead, streaming ever faster.
“Xiao Xuezheng!”
Shi Runrun had no idea how serious his injury was, but seeing the blood was shocking.
She pulled out her phone, intent on calling for an ambulance, but in the next moment, he snatched it away and slipped it into his pocket. Then he pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly, his voice low and commanding: “Take me home. Take me to your home in this city.”
Shi Runrun was silent.
“I won’t go to the hospital. If you don’t want to watch me die, take me home.”
She had no choice. She knew his stubbornness and could not argue. Gritting her teeth, she helped him up and led him to her small rented apartment.
Fortunately, it was close by. Otherwise, she doubted she could have managed to support such a tall man.
Inside, she helped him onto the bed, feeling as though she had used every ounce of strength she possessed.
She collapsed onto the floor, breathing heavily.
He lay on the bed, clearly in pain, pressing his forehead, but the bleeding would not stop.
“Oh God! Xiao Xuezheng, you need to go to the hospital! You’re bleeding more and more—it must be from hitting the wall!”
Shi Runrun spoke anxiously, reaching for his pocket to retrieve her phone and call for help.
But again, her hand was seized firmly by his.
His voice came, deep and calm: “No need. I’ve contacted a private doctor. She’ll be here soon.”
Sure enough, before long, there was a knock at the door.
Shi Runrun hurried to open it, finding a female doctor in a white coat waiting outside, medical kit in hand.
She quickly let the doctor in, asking her to treat Xiao Xuezheng first, but the doctor stood respectfully, awaiting his instructions.
Pressing his injured forehead, Xiao Xuezheng spoke to the doctor: “Check my wife first.”
Shi Runrun was stunned.
She could hardly believe what she had heard, but the doctor came over, seated her in a chair, and began examining her.
Shi Runrun gazed in disbelief at him on the bed, unable to reconcile the fact that, in this moment, she was the one he cared for first.
He was the one injured and bleeding.
Why not treat himself first? Why was he so concerned about her health?
Could it be that, in his heart, she was more important than himself?
As she pondered this, a bitter taste filled her heart, her feelings growing more complicated. The more she thought, the more her tears flowed.
This love, tangled as it was, what would its ending be?
She longed to know, but it seemed reality was playing tricks on her, refusing to let her find out.
The doctor examined her carefully, then turned to Xiao Xuezheng and reported, “Sir, your wife’s recovery is excellent. Her wounds have healed. She’s simply been overworked and hasn’t slept well, which accounts for her pallor. She should take more nutrition and rest.”
Only then did Xiao Xuezheng feel relieved. Suddenly, as if remembering something, he asked anxiously, “Did her previous miscarriage leave any lasting damage?”
The doctor replied, “No major issues, sir. She just needs to avoid overexertion for now and focus on recovery. Her body will heal on its own.”
