Chapter 064: She Refused to Believe They Had Made Up So Quickly
As these thoughts raced through her mind, Shi Runrun shuddered, unable to imagine just how terrifying that scene must have been. At that moment, the man sitting beside her reached out his large hand and gently took her small, uneasy fingers in his grasp.
Turning her head, Shi Runrun looked at him. He met her gaze and said softly, “Don’t worry. With me here, no one can hurt you.”
In an instant, the anxiety that had gripped Shi Runrun’s heart eased once more. He was always like this—able to provide a profound sense of security. Yet, what puzzled her was why someone would go to such great lengths to follow a nobody like herself.
...
B City Airport.
A business car came to a smooth stop at the entrance. As soon as they got out, staff members arrived to guide them inside. It truly had to be said—the lives of the wealthy were enviable indeed.
Walking beside him, led into the airport by courteous staff, Shi Runrun recalled her first experience flying. Back then, she knew nothing; she had to queue for tickets, boarding passes, and security checks—everything. But now, with him, all those matters were handled with polite efficiency. He didn’t have to line up for a boarding pass, and there were exclusive security lanes just for them. Inside, there was even a VIP lounge for their comfort.
With about half an hour until boarding, their party settled into the VIP lounge. Surrounded by an array of exquisite delicacies, Shi Runrun was both amazed and a little out of place. She whispered to Xiao Xuezheng beside her, asking if all of this was really free for the taking.
Once the man reassured her, Shi Runrun, a true foodie, lit up with joy and hurried off, eyes sparkling, to sample the delicious treats.
She was just in time—she was starving!
Not far away, Ji Yunan watched the cheerful, giggling girl, then approached the man in shirt and slacks, who was wearing a gentle smile.
He said, “Xuezheng, you can’t hide the tenderness in your eyes for your little wife. But let me ask you, if the person who targeted her is really—her—what will you do? On one hand, you have the younger sister entrusted to you by your first love; on the other, there’s your new love. Have you made up your mind whom you’ll choose?”
Xiao Xuezheng lifted his gaze, his dark eyes narrowing sharply, turning cold as they locked onto Ji Yunan’s. Glancing casually at the small woman enjoying hot food not far away, he signaled for Ji Yunan to follow him.
They walked a few steps away, putting some distance between themselves and Shi Runrun.
Under the warm orange lighting, Xiao Xuezheng’s features grew solemn. He looked at Ji Yunan and said, “Yunan, ever since I married Shi Runrun, I don’t know when it started, but bit by bit, I’ve begun to forget what happened when I was eighteen.”
At his words, Ji Yunan’s eyes widened in shock, staring at him in disbelief. He tried to read something in those pitch-black eyes, but the man before him hid his emotions well; all Ji Yunan could see was boundless sorrow.
Xiao Xuezheng curled his lips into a bitter smile. “When I was eighteen, I was with Zaozao, and I thought she was my destiny for the rest of my life. But that car accident took her away. Before she died, she asked me to look after her only sister, Wanwan. But... but, Yunan, what I’ve lost now is my own child!”
As he spoke, he clenched his fist and slammed it hard against the nearby wall.
“Xuezheng!”
Ji Yunan grabbed his hand, glancing toward Shi Runrun, who was still absorbed in her food, thankfully oblivious to their turmoil.
Drawing his gaze back, Ji Yunan said hoarsely, “I know, Xuezheng. I know the pain in your heart... Losing a child isn’t just hard for your wife; it’s hard for you, too. I understand.”
Xiao Xuezheng pressed his lips together and continued, “At first, I agreed to marry Shi Runrun only because her unexpected pregnancy needed an explanation for the family. I told myself, Zaozao is gone—does it matter whom I’m with? But as I spent every day and night with her, I found that, bit by bit, my heart was drawn to her...”
Ji Yunan was silent.
“Yunan, you’re right. Maybe I’m not a good man; I fall for whoever comes into my life. But perhaps... I really have started to like Shi Runrun.”
At that moment, Shi Runrun came running over with a handmade cake in her hands, smiling brightly. “Xiao Xuezheng! Brother Yunan! What are you two doing over here, chatting away with all this good food left untouched?”
Their conversation was interrupted, and their expressions froze before they could regain composure.
Luckily, Ji Yunan reacted quickly. He stepped in front of her with a charming smile. “Little sister-in-law, let me tell you a secret: I swing both ways. Lately, I’ve found your husband especially attractive!”
As he spoke, he even threw an arm around the other man’s shoulder.
Shi Runrun’s eyes widened in shock, and suddenly, the cake in her hand lost all appeal. She set it aside at once, rushed over, and pried Brother Yunan’s hand off before tightly holding her husband’s arm. She said anxiously, “No! Brother Yunan! That can’t be! Two men can’t have a future together! I urge you to abandon this terrible idea immediately! Huanhuan is still waiting for you back in the capital!”
Ji Yunan burst out laughing.
Meanwhile, Xiao Xuezheng’s handsome face darkened. Watching his silly wife fiercely defend her territory, he couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
...
At the same time, in the director’s office of a fashion design company in the capital, Chi Wanwan leaned back in her leather chair, stretching her neck after a long day’s work. Suddenly, the phone on her desk rang, shattering the quiet of her after-work hours.
She picked up, but after only a few words from the other end, her expression changed dramatically, turning cold and sinister.
“What?! Xuezheng chased that wretched woman all the way to B City?! I don’t believe it! You must be lying!”
Unexpectedly, a flood of photos arrived soon after. In the pictures, Shi Runrun held onto the arm of the man from her dreams; the two of them looked sweet and happy, smiling together at the airport.
Chi Wanwan stared wide-eyed, stunned and incredulous. Speaking into the phone, she demanded, “Are you sure? I created such a huge misunderstanding between them—how shameless must Shi Runrun be to forgive Xuezheng and go back to him?”
The conversation went on for a while until Chi Wanwan, still in disbelief, hung up. As the call ended, she tossed her phone onto the desk and collapsed weakly into her chair.
No!
No!
She refused to believe it. She had gone to such lengths, scheming and risking everything just to tear them apart. Had they really made up so quickly?
She refused to accept it.
Chi Wanwan stood up, her whole body radiating a chilling aura, fear and frost spreading in her eyes. Her hands clenched unconsciously, long nails digging into her palms.
She swore to herself that she would drive that wretched Shi Runrun away from Xuezheng’s side—no matter what it took.
